Review @ ChristopherJRM

Album released after the biggest pause in U2's career. Although the reception of "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" was mixed, U2 went to studio with the intention of recording a great album. The record was being made and they were opening the appetite of the fans by saying they were recording an experimental album and that it would probably be One of the best Ones in their career. Best Ones? When you use that expression you immediately think of pieces like "War", "The Joshua Tree" and "Achtung Baby"... One more like that? Who wouldn't get curious? And though the album was a little behind the expectations of some people, I think the album is pretty good. I wouldn't say it's One of the best, because in U2's discography each album works by itself, in a way there is a record for each like, but this album is quite satisfatory and fulfills what's required very well. It's not as experimental as "Achtung Baby", much less as "Zooropa" or "Pop", since very hardly they'll do anything like that again. Yet, it's still experimental, but in a safer way. Keeping the traditional sound and adding it other elements. On singles "Magnificent" and "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight" One can still feel the same will to do simple songs with the typical structure of an U2 song - which is gonna cause a certain attention by some radios- but yet there's still some little new stuff here and there and a more free attitude in the way U2 recorded. There's the heavy/danceable riff of "Get on Your Boots" which makes it an unique song, there's the geniality around "Breathe", the addictive and catchy "No Line on the Horizon" and the calmer ambient "Cedars of Lebanon". 3 candidates to some of the best masterpieces made by U2 this last decade. Maybe it's a little suspect, an U2 fan do any kind of review to his favourite band, but I try to evaluate this record from a more universal point of view and still doesn't pass me by as something failed or incomplete. It doesn't sound like the band had any plan at all while recording the CD and maybe they just limitted themselves to record songs until having a complete group of songs, but it still sounds beautiful. Putting Bono's political situation aside, U2 still shine a lot musically...
