Much like the antiseptic they’re named after, ST 37 keep wiping away the infection and driving a rusty, psychedelic nail into the third eye. They formed in 1987 as an amalgamation of bands Tulum – brothers Joel (guitar) and Carlton (vocals) Crutcher – and the Elegant Doormats (bassist/singer Scott Telles), rounded out by original drummer John Foxworth. Telles spent time in early-1980s Houston punks Vast Majority, and ST 37 initially started off as a straight-ahead punk band, before infusing their music with more space and Krautrock influences like Chrome and Hawkwind in the 1990s. Output during this time was staggering, including cassettes, 7 inches, and compilations. Drummer Lisa Cameron joined in 1996, a refugee from Roky Erickson’s band, Glass Eye, and Three Day Stubble. 1998’s Spaceage was their first proper CD on the Black Widow label, and 2000’s I Love to Talk If There’s Anything to Talk About was their first for local label Emperor Jones. Side bands are also plentiful in the ST camp: Bahrain, Book of Shadows, Venison Whirled, Jherri Signfeldt's Atrophied Saq, and Abigail und Hansel. The combination of Telles’ bolt-cutter basslines and vocals, Crutcher’s whirling guitar, and Cameron’s stellar drumming, recently supplanted by Baby Robots guitarist Bobby Baker, continues to dig in, and their 20th anniversary disc And Then What (Noiseville) is a perfect question for them to pose
